MashaAllah sister, that's alot better than my first ever attempt! pompoms

You could try adding some veins to the leaf inshaAllah. That's my tip! wink Thumbs Up InshaAllah Aisha will also reply to this.

It's so nice seeing you try out painting. InshaAllah the Art Garden has brought out the artist in you. painting

jazakullah khayr sisters. It was fun and surprisingly relaxing! green-tea-cup For adding the veins....that kind of detail I was having a hard time with....I think my brushes are all too thick. I called the local craft store and they said detail brushes are very $$$. So the told me to use a fine tip marker pencilbox and dip it in the paint. Do you have any other suggestions insha'Allah?

I kept looking at all of the beautiful art you all do and I wanted to try. I know I'm not an artrist paintpallet but it looks sooo nice the work you guys do mashaAllah .

I'll keep having fun with it insha"Allah and hopefully you guys can teach me insha'Allah.

As-Salaamu alaikum

MashaAllah it's great that you took the plunge and put paint to canvas Shout
Is it a leaf from the prayer-plant? Their leaves fold up when it gets dark if I remember correctly.
To make it more life-like maybe you could do some shading and highlighting.Imagine a light-source from top left of the canvas for example - you would get a shadow along the lower-right side of the leaf. To paint the shadow you could try using a slightly darker shade of the colour at the edge of the leaf and dilute the paint so that it is just a hint of a shadow. It is easier to build up from using too little than it is to try to remove too much thick paint if it is too dark and heavy. I am not that experienced myself and perhaps sis Mabsoota has some tips about shading and highlighting.
You could also practice drawing the leaf on paper prior to painting.
If you start off with the centre line of the leaf as a curved line instead of a straight line you will get more of a sense of depth.

Have fun dear sister. cool

As Salamu Alaikum

Sister Umm-Nu’man did you check out the link sister Aisha posted “How to draw and Paint”

For the last few days I am hooked onto that site……..every spare minute I have I am watching one of the videos.

Painting on canvas is not on my agenda for the present but I found the video tutorials very interesting. The Artweaver program; which is a painting and effects program; has different paints and brushes so it fun to work along with the tutorial. For once I am not complaining about my slow connection. hehe hehe

I also find doodling with Artweaver very relaxing and therapeutic. And I started using ArtRage again. Shout

Check this site out if you haven't done so already wink

Sister Aisha's tip about highlighting and shading is brilliant. A light source is always important. You could even practice looking at a real leaf next to say a window and look at the areas the light will hit the leaf, veins etc. The highlighted part should be the final bit you do. First get those lines in using a thin brush. Then the shaded bits like sister Aisha suggested. Then add the highlights, perhaps using a dry brush and use it on the unshaded areas of the leaf inshaAllah. painting

As Salamu Alaikum

I was looking for help on types of brushes

Sister Umm-Nu’man in one video the instructor uses a piece of cardboard to make grass. Not sure which video it was, because I watched the others too for watercolour and oil painting.

Maybe that’s an idea for a very thin brush. wink

I don't understand why thinner brushes should be very expensive -perhaps you should shop around and find a more helpful art supplies dealer?
Maybe you could by a cheap eyeliner brush - those are very thin.
But something to bear in mind when using Acrylic paints is to choose brushes with synthetic bristles as Acrylic paint damages natural bristles apparently.

I painted a Chrysanthemum with quite a bit of shading in my flowers thread I will find the link for you inshaAllah.

One thing I wanted to add is to avoid using black straight from the tube for the shadows. It's better to mix it with another colour or to use an entirely diiferent colour altogether like a dark brown instead inshaAllah. Practise on paper first.

ooohhh! All good tips! Shout JazakAllahu Khayran The eyeliner brush....great idea and the advice about the black paint....ohh great. This is all very helpful.... JazakiAllah Hug Sis Zaza, so there is a video on brushes? I think I must have been in the wrong part of the site....I didn't see any videos.

I've done another painting...I sketched it on paper first and it's almost done insha'Allah (i.e. the painting). I wanted to post it here for your advice but I'm concerned: will the dry acrylic paint damage the surface of my scanner?

No sister Umm An-Nu'man the videos were not about brushes especially but painting in general.

Time well-spent watching them.

If it is a flat-bed scanner, it shouldn't be a problem as the paint is already dry

I am looking forward to seeing the new painting Shout paintpallet

I don't know what a flat bed scanner is....I'm so behind with technology....lol....its one of those 3 in 1 thingies if that helps. I'll try to scan it today insha'Allah....warning: it, like my first attempt, resembles the art of a child so try not to laugh too hard lol and keep in mind that it's not done yet.

I did get some books that teach about brush strokes, how to get certain effects, etc. so insha'Allah w/ some practice I'll improve insha'Allah.
